 PRESS RELEASE

Fraternal Order of Police Opposes Legislation to Change Motorcycle Helmet Law

“The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has historically opposed changing the motorcycle helmet law,” said Dave Hiller, Chairman of the FOP Legislative Committee.  “We cannot in good conscience change our position because law enforcement will receive money from the fees collected by this change in the law.”

“We feel that the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, Secondary Road Patrol funding and Michigan State Police troopers need funding, however, collecting fees to ride a motorcycle without a helmet is not the way to fund these critical needs,” continued Hiller.

Hiller went on to say:  “The recent budget cuts and reductions in revenue sharing have reduced the ranks of police officers across the State.  The FOP has taken a position that funding for additional officers and training for them is critical, however, we have maintained that the Legislature needs to find a realistic, dedicated source of funding.  If public safety is a priority, we deserve a much more stable, dedicated source of funding.”

The FOP is Michigan’s oldest and largest law enforcement group. It is part of a national organization with more than 320,000 members.

F.O.P. OPPOSES PROPOSED SENTENCING CHANGES

The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) stands with other law enforcement groups to oppose the proposed sentencing changes.

“We cannot balance the budget at the expense of public safety,” said John Buczek, Executive Director of the F.O.P.  “Reducing these felonies to misdemeanors weakens law enforcements’ ability to protect the citizens of Michigan.”

The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police supports House Bill 4852 sponsored by Representative George Cushingberry. Click here for press release.
