LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS MICHIGAN For over fifteen years law enforcement officers have participated in this fundraiser for Special Olympics MICHIGAN. Many Michigan Fraternal Order of Police lodges participated in their local communities. Three years ago the state lodge was approached by Ken Bennett and asked to participate as a statewide sponsor. The Michigan State Lodge named the Michigan Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics MICHIGAN a dedicated charity of the organization! The Michigan State Lodge began its participation with a $5,000.00 annual donation. The state lodge also encouraged local lodge donations and participation in local community runs. In 1999, the state lodge expanded its participation by sponsoring a running team in the state marathon, AND HAS DONE SO EVERY YEAR SINCE. The Torch Run is a non-stop relay marathon which covers 700 miles from the top of the Upper Peninsula at Copper Harbor, down through the length of the state, to finish at the Sterling Heights F.O.P. Hall. *The Torch run in michigan also has hundreds of community runs throughout the state.
